Every summer, players of all ages from around the Greater New City Metropolitan area come together to learn the game of baseball from the best. Led by an instructional team consisting of former major leaguers, collegiate coaches, and other baseball experts, the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra is undoubtedly a summer mainstay of youth baseball instruction. If anyone knows how to choose a baseball camp, it’s Bob Hirschfield, founder and director of the New York Baseball Academy (NYBA), now in its 41st year and ranked by Baseball America as one of the top five baseball programs in the county. Last year, NYBA became part of Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island, and John Russo, Hofstra’s head baseball coach, became a co-director of the Academy. Myth: Being that Hofstra is a college campus, the summer camp programs take place in an environment similar to school and the children are in classrooms all day. Fact: The summer camp programs do take place on the college campus, which lies on 240 beautiful acres that turn into camp grounds for the summer. Children are often outdoors playing games and engaging in activities created by camp counselors and directors.
